Deactivating the Old Plugin & Purging Cache
The safe order of operations so nothing breaks.
Deactivating the Old Plugin and Purging Cache
This is the final step of moving your SEO over to Vibe. Once Vibe is doing your SEO, your old plugin (Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, or SEOPress) is no longer needed. Worse, if you leave it running alongside Vibe, both plugins write SEO tags into your pages at the same time. That means every page ends up with duplicate titles, duplicate canonicals, and duplicate meta descriptions. Google tolerates it, but it is messy and it is not the clean setup you want. This lesson walks you through turning the old plugin off and clearing your cache so the change shows up on the live site right away.
Why the order matters
There is a safe sequence, and doing it out of order is the main way people get burned. The order is: back up your data into Vibe first, make Vibe your primary SEO second, deactivate the old plugin third, and let Vibe purge your cache last.
You back up first so nothing is ever lost. Vibe copies every title, meta description, noindex flag, and canonical out of your old plugin and into its own store before you touch anything. You switch Vibe to primary second so that the moment the old plugin goes dark, Vibe is already handling your titles, meta tags, robots, canonicals, and sitemap. Only then do you deactivate the old plugin. If you deactivated it before Vibe was backed up and primary, your pages would briefly lose their SEO tags. The cache purge comes last because your page is done changing and now the live site needs to stop serving the old, stale version.
Where this lives
Everything happens in Site Settings under the card titled "SEO migration status." Steps one and two live in the "Back up your SEO into Vibe" widget at the top of that card, in a checklist called "Safe switch in 3 steps." The deactivate step is even easier to find, because once Vibe is primary and your old plugin is still active, Vibe shows a bright warning at the top of every admin page.
Step by step
-
Finish the backup. In the "Back up your SEO into Vibe" widget, click "Back up everything into Vibe." A progress bar fills as Vibe imports your pages. When it reads "Backed up," step one is done. The chips show your coverage for titles, meta descriptions, noindex flags, and canonicals.
-
Make Vibe primary. In the same 3-step checklist, click "Make Vibe primary." Vibe confirms with a short prompt reminding you it will take over your titles, meta tags, robots, canonicals, and sitemap, and that this is reversible. Confirm it. The status pill at the top of the card flips to "Vibe is primary."
-
Deactivate the old plugin. Now Vibe shows a warning notice on every admin page: "Vibe is now your primary SEO, but [your old plugin] is still active." It explains that both are emitting SEO tags right now, so your pages have duplicate titles, canonicals, and meta descriptions. Click the "Deactivate [plugin] now" button. Vibe asks you to confirm, then turns the old plugin off. You can also click "Manage plugins instead" to do it yourself from the Plugins screen.
-
The cache purge is automatic. The instant Vibe deactivates the old plugin, it clears your cache for you. It sends you back to your page first, then purges in the background so your click never hangs on a slow purge. Vibe flushes the caches it knows about, including WP Engine, NitroPack, WP Rocket, LiteSpeed, W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache, WP Fastest Cache, SG Optimizer, and your object cache. Any cache it does not find is simply skipped.
What a good result looks like
After you deactivate, Vibe shows a green success message: "Done. Your old SEO plugin is deactivated. Vibe now handles your SEO cleanly, with no duplicate tags." The warning notice disappears because there is no longer a competing plugin active. Your live pages now carry one clean set of SEO tags from Vibe.
Pro tips and common mistakes
Do not skip the backup. The whole reason this is safe and reversible is that your data is already inside Vibe before the old plugin goes off.
Do not deactivate the old plugin from the Plugins screen before Vibe is primary. Use the checklist order.
This is reversible. If you ever want the old plugin back, you can reactivate it from the Plugins screen at any time.
If an old page still looks stale in your browser after the switch, purge your cache once more, since Vibe purges server and CDN caches but not the copy your own browser is holding.
