Making Vibe Your Primary SEO Plugin
What primary mode means and how to switch it on.
Making Vibe Your Primary SEO Plugin
Only one plugin should control your page head at a time. The page head is the hidden top section of every page where your title tag, meta description, canonical link, robots directive, Open Graph tags, and Twitter Card tags live. If two SEO plugins both write those tags, Google sees duplicates and has to guess which one to trust. Turning Vibe into your primary SEO plugin makes it the single source of truth for all of that, and moves you cleanly off Yoast, Rank Math, All in One SEO, or SEOPress.
What "primary" mode actually does
When Vibe is primary, it takes over your page head on the front end of the site. Nothing changes in the admin area or in behind-the-scenes requests. On live pages, Vibe now writes:
- The title tag and meta description
- The canonical link
- The robots directive (your index and noindex signals)
- Open Graph and Twitter Card tags for social sharing
It also cleans up after your theme and WordPress core. Vibe removes WordPress core's duplicate canonical tag, routes your index and noindex signals through the one official robots tag so there is never a second contradictory one, and suppresses the theme's own robots tag. On top of that, Vibe runs a safety net that scans the entire page head and strips any duplicate of a tag it owns, no matter what produced it. The result is exactly one clean tag of each type.
Two more things switch on with primary mode. Your sitemap at /vp-sitemap.xml starts resolving the first time you enable it. And if you chose to retire thin author or date archive pages in Search Appearance, Vibe redirects them to your homepage so they do not creep back into Google.
How Vibe decides on its own
Vibe is smart about this before you touch anything. On a site where Vibe is the only SEO plugin, it automatically becomes primary. On a site where Yoast, Rank Math, All in One SEO, or SEOPress is still active, Vibe stays out of the way in what the dashboard calls Mirror mode, and shows you a notice asking you to pick an owner. Once you make an explicit choice, that choice sticks.
How to turn it on, step by step
Everything lives in the WordPress sidebar under Vibe SEO, on the Settings page titled "Vibe SEO Site Settings." Look for the "SEO migration status" area and the card at the top called "Back up your SEO into Vibe." Vibe walks you through a safe switch in three steps.
-
Back up your data into Vibe. Click "Back up everything into Vibe." This copies every title, meta description, noindex flag, and canonical from your old plugin into Vibe's own store. A progress bar shows how many values are backed up. This changes nothing on your live site. It just makes a safe copy so you lose nothing when you switch. Vibe also imports your old plugin's default social image and archive settings automatically, and it keeps backfilling in the background on every admin page load until it reports "Migration complete."
-
Make Vibe your primary SEO. Once the backup is done, a "Make Vibe primary" button unlocks. Click it and confirm. Vibe now owns your titles, meta tags, robots, canonicals, and sitemap. The status badge flips from "Mirror mode" to "Vibe is primary."
-
Deactivate the old plugin. Right after you switch, Vibe shows a prominent warning on every admin page: both plugins are live and your pages have duplicate tags. Click "Deactivate now" to finish the switch in one click. Vibe turns off the old plugin and clears your caches, including CDN caches, so the clean head shows up on your live site right away.
What a good result looks like
The migration status badge reads "Vibe is primary." The backup pill reads "Backed up," and the field coverage table shows titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, and noindex flags at or near 100 percent. No competitor plugin is active, and the duplicate-tag warning is gone. View any live page's source and you see one title, one canonical, and one robots tag.
Pro tips and common mistakes
- Always back up first. The button in step one is what makes the switch reversible with nothing lost.
- Do not stop after step two. Leaving the old plugin active is the number one mistake, because both plugins keep writing tags and you get duplicates. Finish with step three.
- Keeping both plugins installed is fine. The old one drops to a passive backstop and you can reactivate it from the Plugins screen at any time.
- If your coverage table shows a gap, click "Complete now" to import the rest before you flip.
