Keeping Vibe the Single Source of Truth

Stop duplicate tags from confusing Google.

Keeping Vibe the Single Source of Truth

Every page on your site has a hidden section called the head. It holds the tags that tell Google what the page is: the title, the meta description, the canonical link, the robots directive that says index or noindex, the Open Graph and Twitter tags that build your social previews, and the JSON-LD schema that describes your business. The rule search engines follow is simple. There should be exactly one of each of these per page.

The trouble is that WordPress core, your theme, and any SEO plugin you have installed all want to write these tags. When two of them fire, your page ships two titles, two canonicals, or worst of all two robots tags that disagree, one saying index and one saying noindex. Google then has to guess which one is authoritative, and it does not always guess your way. This lesson shows how to make Vibe the one and only source of these tags.

What Vibe does once it is primary

When Vibe is the primary SEO plugin, it takes over the head cleanly. It renders your title, meta description, canonical, Open Graph, Twitter Card, and robots tags for every page from the data saved in the Vibe SEO metabox. It also does the cleanup that stops duplicates:

  • It removes the canonical link that WordPress core prints on its own, because Vibe now prints the correct one.
  • It routes your index and noindex directives through the single robots tag that WordPress core already emits, instead of printing a second one. It also suppresses the theme's own robots tag. The result is one robots directive per page, and it is yours.
  • As a universal safety net, Vibe reads the whole finished head, keeps the first clean copy of each tag it owns (canonical, robots, description, and every og and twitter tag), and strips any later duplicate no matter which plugin or theme produced it.

Turning it on the safe way

The controls live under the Vibe SEO menu on the Settings page. Do the three steps in order.

  1. Find the card titled Back up your SEO into Vibe. Click Back up everything into Vibe. This copies every title, meta description, noindex flag, and canonical from your old SEO plugin, whether that is Yoast, Rank Math, All in One SEO, or SEOPress, into Vibe's own store. This changes nothing on your live site. It is only a backup, and a progress bar shows it filling to one hundred percent. Vibe also backfills quietly on its own on every admin page load, so if the bar is already full you are done with this step.

  2. In the same card, once the backup reads done, use Make Vibe primary. You can also find the switch further down under the SEO output mode card, labeled Vibe SEO is the primary SEO plugin. A green pill reading Vibe is primary confirms the switch. An amber Mirror mode pill means Vibe is still standing aside.

  3. Deactivate your old SEO plugin from the Plugins page. Because your data is already backed up into Vibe, nothing is lost. This step is what actually stops the duplicate tags, so do not skip it.

If you turn Vibe primary while the old plugin is still active, both are writing tags at the same time and your pages temporarily carry duplicates. Vibe warns you with a prominent notice at the top of the admin and gives you a one click Deactivate button that also purges your caches. This is safe and reversible. You can reactivate the old plugin from Plugins at any time.

On a fresh site where Vibe is the only SEO plugin, it makes itself primary automatically. If a competitor is already running, Vibe stays out of the way and shows a notice asking you to choose.

The schema source

Schema has its own control on the Schema page. Vibe emits one JSON-LD graph in the head describing your business. To keep it the only one, tick the Single source option, Let Vibe be the only schema source. Vibe then removes any JSON-LD it did not create, whether from a code snippet, another plugin, your theme, or schema baked into a page, so search engines see one authoritative graph. If you would rather another plugin own schema, tick Defer to competing SEO plugin instead and Vibe Schema goes silent.

At the top of the Schema page, Vibe scans your live site and reports what it finds. A warning tells you it found other schema blocks it did not create. A green message reads that no conflicting schema was detected and Vibe is the single source of schema. Use Re-scan after any change.

What good looks like and common mistakes

A clean setup shows the green Vibe is primary pill, a schema scan that says no conflicts, and no old SEO plugin still active. The most common mistake is leaving two SEO plugins running at once, which is the duplicate problem this lesson solves. The second is switching primary before backing up, so always back up first, switch second, deactivate third. The third is forgetting schema baked into a page or a code snippet, which the schema scan and the single source option are built to catch. When in doubt, re-scan, and let the caches purge before you judge the result.
