Migrate Off Yoast in an Afternoon

The exact safe sequence, start to finish.

What this is and why it matters

Moving your SEO from Yoast to Vibe sounds risky, because your titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, and noindex flags are the settings that keep your rankings intact. Vibe is built so this move is safe, reversible, and quick. It copies all of that data into its own store first, then lets you flip the switch, then helps you turn Yoast off cleanly. Nothing on your live site changes until you choose to make Vibe primary, and every step can be undone. This same flow works whether you are coming from Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, or SEOPress. It is called Yoast here because that is the most common starting point.

Where it lives

In your WordPress admin sidebar, open Vibe SEO and click Settings. Scroll to the card titled Back up your SEO into Vibe, followed by the SEO migration status card. These two cards are your whole control panel for the move. A status pill at the top tells you where you stand. It reads Vibe is primary once you have switched, or Mirror mode while Yoast is still in charge.

Step 1: Back up your SEO into Vibe

The first card shows a row of chips counting how much of your Yoast data is already safe in Vibe: titles, meta descriptions, noindex flags, and canonicals, each shown as a "backed up of total" number. A blue progress bar reads something like "0 of 340 SEO values backed up (0%)".

Click Back up everything into Vibe. Vibe imports your pages in batches, updating the bar as it goes, and you can leave the page running. When it finishes, the bar reaches 100%, the pill flips to Backed up, and the page refreshes on its own. Read the plain-English promise on the card and believe it: this changes nothing on your live site. It only makes the backup so you can switch whenever you are ready with nothing lost.

Vibe also runs a quiet background version of this on every admin page load, so your numbers may already be partway up before you click. If you want it finished immediately on a large site, use the Complete now button in the SEO migration status card to drain the rest in one go.

Step 2: Let Vibe seed your global settings

You do not do anything here. The moment Yoast is detected, Vibe copies your site-wide settings that live outside individual pages: your default social sharing image and your author and date archive on or off choices. This happens once, automatically, and it never overwrites anything you have already set in Vibe. It exists so the handoff is complete without you re-entering settings by hand.

Step 3: Make Vibe your primary SEO

Under the backup card is a checklist titled Safe switch in 3 steps. Step 1 ticks green once your backup is done. Step 2 then unlocks a Make Vibe primary button. Click it, confirm the dialog, and Vibe takes over your titles, meta tags, robots directives, canonicals, and sitemap. Because your data is already backed up, this is safe and reversible.

Step 4: Verify the switch

As soon as Vibe is primary while Yoast is still active, a yellow warning notice appears at the top of every admin page. It says Vibe is now primary but Yoast is still running, so both are emitting SEO tags and your pages temporarily have duplicate titles, canonicals, and descriptions. That warning is your confirmation that the switch worked. Below, the SEO migration status card shows a field-by-field coverage table with a colored bar for each field, green at full coverage. Green rows across the board mean your data made the trip.

Step 5: Deactivate Yoast and let the cache clear itself

In that yellow warning, click Deactivate Yoast SEO now and confirm. Vibe turns Yoast off for you, shows a green "Done" confirmation, and automatically purges your caches, including WP Engine and NitroPack, so the clean single set of tags reaches visitors right away. You do not need to purge anything by hand. If you would rather do it yourself, the notice also links to the standard Plugins screen.

What a good result looks like

The backup pill reads Backed up, the status pill reads Vibe is primary, every row in the coverage table is green, the yellow duplicate-tag warning is gone, and Yoast shows as inactive on the Plugins screen. Your titles and descriptions on the live site look exactly as before, now served by Vibe.

Pro tips and common mistakes

Do the steps in order. Never deactivate Yoast before the backup hits 100%, or you strip the source data before it is copied. Do not stop at step 2 and leave both plugins primary, because the duplicate tags the warning describes are real and confuse Google, so finish step 3 the same afternoon. Only published posts and pages are migrated, which is correct, so ignore trashed items in your counts. If a value looks missing, click Back up everything into Vibe again. It is safe to re-run and only fills gaps. And if you ever change your mind, Yoast is only deactivated, not deleted, so you can reactivate it from the Plugins screen at any time.
