Moving a Key to a New Site

Reassign a key when you rebuild or move a domain.

Moving a Key to a New Site

What this is and why it matters

Every Vibe SEO access key works on one website only. The key is bound to the exact domain where you first activated it, which is why pasting that same key into a second site is refused with a message like "This access key is already activated on yoursite.com." That rule keeps one subscription tied to one site, but it gets in the way in one common situation: you are rebuilding your site on a new domain, or migrating to a fresh WordPress install, and you need the key to follow you.

The customer portal handles this with a self-service action called Reassign domain. It cancels the key on the old site and mints a brand new key bound to the same subscription. You keep paying one price, your billing does not restart, and you do not need to email support. The old install goes dark and the new one comes to life under the new key.

Reassign or add a key first

If your plan covers more than one domain (for example the 3 Domains plan) and you still have a free slot, you do not need to reassign anything. Use the green "+ Add a key" button instead to activate another site while keeping the old one running. The portal even nudges you toward this: when you are out of slots it shows "You are using all your domains, reassign one to a new site, or upgrade your plan to add more." Reassign is specifically for moving a single site to a new address, not for adding capacity.

Where it lives

Sign in at your account portal, the My Account page at yoursite.com/my-account/, using the email address you subscribed with. Under the "Your products" section, the "Vibe SEO Plugin" window lists your keys in a table with columns for Access key, Status, Activated on, Plan, and Next billing. The Activated on column shows the domain each key is currently locked to. Every active key row has a "Reassign domain" button on the right, next to Cancel.

Step by step

  1. Sign in to the My Account portal with your subscriber email. If you just bought, set your password first from the "Set your Vibe SEO portal password" email.
  2. In the Vibe SEO Plugin window, find the row for the site you are moving. Confirm the domain shown under Activated on is the one you want to retire.
  3. Click Reassign domain on that row.
  4. Read the confirmation modal, titled "Reassign this key to a new domain?" It explains that a new key is generated, the current key is cancelled immediately, and the plugin stops working on the old site within a few minutes.
  5. Tick the acknowledgement checkbox that reads "I understand that all virtual pages and cached data on this site will be permanently lost." The blue "Yes, reassign to a new domain" button stays greyed out until you check it.
  6. Click Yes, reassign to a new domain.
  7. The "New key issued" screen shows your new access key with a Copy button. Copy it now. The same key is also emailed to you as "Your new Vibe SEO access key."
  8. On the new WordPress site, go to Vibe SEO, then Settings. Paste the new key into the Access key field, tick the Terms of Service box, and click Validate and activate.
  9. To retire the old site instantly, go to the old site's Vibe SEO, then Settings, and click "Re-validate against vibeseo.com." Otherwise it locks itself out on its own within 24 hours.

What a good result looks like

Right after reassigning, the new key shows as "Awaiting activation" in your portal. Once you redeem it on the new site, its status flips to "Active" and the new domain appears under Activated on. The old key row now reads "Canceled." Your plan, price, and next billing date are unchanged. Only the key moved.

Pro tips and common mistakes

Export anything you need before you confirm. Nothing transfers to the new domain. Reassigning deletes the old site's virtual pages, dashboard stats and GSC history, scanner results, keyword watchlist and position history, block variations, internal-link suggestions, and content briefs. The new install starts completely fresh.

Do not try to shortcut the process by pasting the old key into the new site. It will be rejected because that key is still bound to the old domain. Always generate a new key through Reassign.

A key that is already cancelled, or scheduled to cancel at period end, cannot be reassigned. The Reassign domain button only appears on keys that are currently active.

Remember the rule still holds after you finish: one key, one site. You end with a single active key living on the new domain, and your subscription rolls on without interruption.
