A/B Title Testing
Let the data pick your highest-performing title.
What A/B Title Testing does
Your page title is the blue clickable line in Google's search results. It is one of the biggest levers you have on how many people click a result that already ranks. A/B Title Testing lets you try a second wording for that title and find out which one earns more clicks, using real search data instead of a guess.
Here is the important part about how it works, because it is different from the split tests you may have seen on landing pages. It does not show different titles to different visitors. Google only indexes one title for a page at a time, so a per visitor coin flip would tell you nothing about search performance. Instead this tool is time based. It serves your current title for the first half of the test, then automatically switches to your alternate title for the second half. You then compare the click through rate between those two date windows. Same page, same rankings, two clean windows, so the difference in clicks points at the title.
Where it lives
The tool is a panel on the editor, not a separate settings page. Open any Post or Page for editing and look in the side column for the Vibe SEO Title A/B box. It also appears as a collapsible "Title A/B test" section inside the main Vibe SEO meta box, and when a test is active that section shows a small "running" badge.
Setting up a test
- Open the page you want to test in the editor.
- In the Alt title (variant B) field, type the second wording you want to try. This is the title that will run in the second half of the test. It accepts up to 120 characters.
- Optionally, let AI draft it for you. Set a Focus keyphrase in the Vibe SEO widget first, then click "Suggest a strong title." It returns three alternative variants written to sit in Google's 50 to 60 character sweet spot, each including your keyphrase near the start, each taking a different angle (one curiosity led, one benefit led, one proof or urgency led). Click any suggestion to drop it straight into the alt title field.
- Set Duration (days). The default is 28. You can choose anywhere from 14 to 90 days. The panel recommends at least 28 so Google has time to recrawl and reindex both versions of the title.
- Tick "Start the test on save" and update the page.
Once running, the panel turns green and shows you exactly what is happening: the current phase (Variant A, your current title, or Variant B, the alt title), the calendar window for each variant, and a "Stop the test now" checkbox if you need to end early. There is no cron job and nothing to babysit. The switch from A to B happens on its own at the midpoint, calculated fresh on every page load.
The title swap is thorough. During the variant B phase it replaces the title tag whether your site prints titles through Vibe SEO, WordPress core, Yoast, or Rank Math, so the change actually reaches the SERP no matter your setup. It only ever applies on the live single page, never in the admin.
Reading the result and picking a winner
When the duration is up, the panel switches to "Test complete." Now you compare the two date windows. Open the Vibe SEO Dashboard and look at the Pages tab (or the Low-CTR pages card), which shows Clicks, Impressions, CTR, and Average position pulled straight from Google Search Console. Line up the variant A window against the variant B window and see which title pulled the higher CTR at a similar impression count. You can do the same comparison directly in the GSC interface.
The tool does not crown a winner for you, and that is deliberate. You look at the numbers and decide. If the alt title won, promote it by pasting it into the page's real title. If the current title held up, leave it. Either way you can tick "Reset and start over" to run a fresh test with a new challenger.
Getting the most out of it
- Test your highest impression, lowest CTR pages first. Those are the ones already getting seen but not clicked, so a better title converts existing impressions into traffic with no new ranking work. The Dashboard's Low-CTR pages card is the shortlist.
- Change one thing at a time. Swap the angle or the hook, not the whole title, so you learn what actually moved the needle.
- Give it room. Keep the duration at 28 days or more so both titles get recrawled and each window holds enough clicks to trust.
- Let the AI suggestions and your Focus keyphrase do the drafting, then edit for your brand voice before you start. The variants already respect length and keyphrase placement, so you spend your time on wording, not mechanics.
- Feed the winner back into your workflow. A title that wins here is a proven pattern you can reuse on similar pages across the site.
